Oni Sarashi Hen discussion thread! (~^_^)~ « Thread Started on Feb 19, 2007, 4:01am »
Since Gaku doesn't really have forums, and it (along with Bloodstained Alley) is more or less the Beast's Lair(/Waka) scanslation group, hopefully this is cool. >_> (the guestbook's a little impractical for discussion)
I'm gonna be raising this question in the forthcoming update (though I'm not sure how many people read it) but I'd definitely like to hear you guys' opinion on the subject.
Kuma didn't translate the sound effects for the first two chapters, which I thought originally wasn't a big deal, but I'm regretting it now. If he's down to go back and translate the SFX for the first two chapters I (or maybe Madcat if he's up for it) will go back and put them in. I'm just trying to decide what the most efficient way is.
Editing them all would be ideal, though time-consuming. Wouldn't affect leechers until later chapters.
Editing them all for the initial release would probably double (at least) the length between releases, but it would be a higher quality product. Putting large effects (e.g. "<wham>") in the margins like some groups do would be faster. I hate muddying up margins (a lot of licensed manga does that or worse by putting it next to the effect in the frame, which is hideous) but since we use the occasional translator's note it wouldn't be unprecedented. For the fastest possible release we could continue as is, without SFX translated. And alternately, we could release chapters without sound effects, then go back and revise them.
Tell me what you think?
Wow, that was long. This thread can also be used for discussing Oni Sarashi in general, what you think of it, theorizing about Higurashi in general (without too many spoilers from "Putting the Pieces Together please, considering season 2's coming soon) and what not.
Oh yeah, before this night is done you night owns will have a new chapter to enjoy. (~^_^)~

I always liked the margin translations, myself. Replacing Japanese characters with English sound effects ("dan" -> "bang") always made me grimace for some reason, you know?
But, if you release a version without first, it really won't matter to me, so ignore my ramblings.

I like the idea of releasing them with the SFX edited in (and yes, I'd be more than willing to help ^_^). I just found it to be a pleasant read with SFX edited in rather than have them added as a note in the margin. Granted it takes a bit longer to release as there's more time spent on editing, but I think that extra time is worth it.
Still whatever way is decided upon it sure as hell will beat some licensed manga I've read, which had the SFX listed in the back 0_o

A margin sfx is fine too.
but I would be against the double release (4th option).... it'll be too confusing and we would have to remind ourself to wait... not to mention double release for you aswell.

I don't know about other translators, but SFX is the hardest thing for me to translate ^^: Usually the American equivalent sound doesn't exist and I have to make one up, and it sometimes doesn't make sense. I can't imagine how hard it would be for a series like Higurashi.

hey, do actually only peoples who are in deh editing want all the sfx to be edited ? ;p
Masochists, the lot of us.. >_>
Thanks to everyone for their great input!
As per the first two chapters, it looks like Kuma would rather not translate sound effects (and instead concentrate on actual dialogue in later chapters), so I guess this issue sort of becomes moot until we can find someone interested in being our SFX translator.. <_<
